First steps in Tagaris

This guide covers your first steps in the app: a location, a person, a first asset, a label. It assumes Tagaris is running and you have finished the setup wizard. If it is not installed yet, Installing Tagaris takes you from an empty server to signed in; come back here after.

The dashboard shows a getting-started checklist while these first steps are outstanding. It follows the same order as this page.

1. Add a location

Locations are where things live: a building, a room, a rack, a home office. Set them up first and every asset you add afterwards has somewhere to be.

Go to Locations, then Add location. A name is enough, for example "HQ, comms room". Add a postal address for a site, and a short description to help a new starter find the place. Locations nest, so set a parent to build a hierarchy, for example rooms inside a building.

2. Add a person

A person is anyone an asset can be assigned to. A person is not a login account: they may never sign in. You add login users separately, and only on the paid multi-user tier.

Go to People, then Add person. A name is enough. An email is optional and is only used for your own reference.

3. Add your first asset

Go to Assets, then Add asset, or pick a template from the starter set to pre-fill the make and category. Fill in the name and the asset tag, the human reference printed on the QR label, for example TAG-0042. Set the category, the location or the assignee, and the status. Purchase date, price, supplier and warranty end are optional but feed the value and renewal reports later.

Save. The asset now has its own page with a history, a QR label and space for photos.

4. Print a QR label

Each asset has a QR label that opens its page when scanned on a phone. For the codes to open on other devices, BETTER_AUTH_URL must be set to the address people actually reach the app on, not localhost. See the configuration notes in Installing Tagaris.

5. Import in bulk (optional)

If you already have a spreadsheet of assets, import it rather than typing each one. Go to Assets, then Import: upload a CSV, map your columns to the fields, and run the dry-run preview before committing. Relations such as category, location and assignee are matched by name. Importing assets and people covers the details, including the Snipe-IT and Halo presets.

What next

Assign assets to people or locations from the asset page, check accessories out, install components and issue consumables from the stock pages. Set up renewal alerts (the Alerts tab in Settings) so warranty and licence expiry email you before they lapse. And export your data at any time from Settings, Organisation, Data; the export is always free.

Paid features (multi-user with roles, single sign-on, the audit log, scheduled reports) and the free device sync beta are covered in their own guides: Licensing, Roles and access, Single sign-on and Device sync.
